A lack of AC units, inadequate insulation, cracks, and poor ventilation are common issues contributing to the sweltering heat in garages during the summer.

If you don’t have A/C, your garage is likely too hot to enjoy during the summer. An obvious option is to install an air conditioner (which we’ll cover below), but there are also cheaper ways to lower the temperature in your shop or garage.
Run a Ceiling Fan
Gall says ceiling fans are cheap and sustainable ways to cool down a garage. “They will hardly be the most obvious candidate, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t perfect. They don’t guzzle electricity and cool the air evenly and pleasantly, without blowing directly at you.”
You can add a ceiling fan to your garage for less than $100. As long as you don’t have low ceilings or an extra-crowded garage, this method is worth a try.
Ensure Proper Insulation
Insulation can keep your garage warm in the winter and help block heat from entering in the summer. It’s especially important if you have an air conditioning system or plan on getting one.
“Think of it as wrapping your garage in a snug blanket, preventing outside heat from seeping in and reducing the workload on your cooling system,” says Anderson.
Add Strategic Ventilation
According to Mello, a two-part approach incorporating ventilation (adding vents or fans) and insulation creates a more comfortable space.
“One alternative approach that I often recommend to my clients is proper insulation and ventilation,” says Mello, “This involves sealing any gaps or cracks in the garage walls and doors to prevent hot air from seeping in and ensuring adequate airflow through the space. This can be achieved through the installation of vents or fans strategically placed to facilitate air circulation.”
Install an A/C Window Unit or a Ductless Mini Split
Those who spend a lot of time in the garage and live in hot climates might decide that installing an AC is worth the money. However, according to our experts, not all types of AC are great choices for the garage.
Gall advises, “If you do opt for an AC, the most adequate pick would be either a ductless mini-split or a window unit. I would advise against portable units unless you already have one for other purposes and can easily roll it into the garage when you need it.”
Don’t Let Your Garage Door Be the Source of a Leak
Cracks in your garage can let heat in, bringing the temperature up several degrees. “The door is usually the major culprit for letting heat in, so coating it with foam or a reflective layer will usually make a huge difference,” says Gall. “It’s an easy and safe DIY task that can only cost you in terms of materials, which aren’t expensive either.”
Painting the garage door a light color is another proactive way to prevent the garage from soaking up so much heat.
Try an Evaporative Cooler
Evaporative coolers are a reliable alternative to more expensive air conditioners. “These devices use water evaporation to cool the air, offering an energy-efficient alternative to traditional air conditioners,” says Anderson. “However, they may not be as effective in humid climates.”
If you live in an area with low humidity, evaporative coolers are worth a try.
Park Your Car Outside of the Garage
Anderson tells us that parking your hot car inside the garage will only make it hotter. Try parking your vehicle outside of the garage, at least until it’s cooled down.
You should also consider decluttering the garage to promote better airflow.
