Selena Gomez has been embracing a retro aesthetic with her glam lately, throwing it back to the ‘50s and early ’60s with vintage-y pageboy bobs on the red carpet. (Need we remind you of how amazing she looked at the Oscars?) But for her new music video “Sunset Blvd,” Gomez left the ‘50s behind in favor of another notable hair decade: the ’80s.
In the video, directed by frequent collaborator Petra Collins and featuring her fiancé Benny Blanco, Gomez looks like she time traveled right outta 1985 with a fluffy, curly bob styled by Renato Campora. Instead of the towering, over-hairsprayed bangs you probably associate with the ‘80s, Gomez and Campora went for a softer take on the big hair trend of that era with a deep side part and lots of volume at the root. Gone are the perfectly sculpted red carpet swoops and swirls and in their place are big, full, tousled curls perfect for running your hands through—something Gomez does a lot of in the very flirty video.
The ‘80s vibes didn’t stop there, either, but I’m not talking about frosty pink lipstick or baby blue eye shadow. Makeup artist Hung Vanngo matched the vixenish vibes of the video with a va-va-voom red flush of color on Gomez’s cheeks and a matching bright crimson on her lips. (It’s probably Rare Beauty’s Kind Words Matte Lipstick in Devoted, which Gomez has been wearing a lot lately.) The same scarlet shade popped up again on Gomez’s nails; according to manicurist Tom Bachik, she’s wearing an as-yet-unreleased shade from his polish line called Stilettos, and she is not wearing nail extensions—those long, ‘80s-lady nails are all Selena. We know Gomez likes a matchy-matchy lip-and-nail combo, so it’s not a surprise to see the red-on-red here.
Looks like it’s time to plug in those hot rollers and catch up on Dynasty, because the glamorous ’80s are alive and well!
