From TikTok highlighter hacks to intense contouring, there have never been more techniques to learn for those who wish to sculpt their jaw. But if you’re seeking a solution that will last you more than just one makeup application, this breakthrough in the aesthetic treatment world is something to consider. On August 3, 2022, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced the approval of Juvéderm’s newest filler: Volux.

Volux is the first hyaluronic acid-based injectable filler approved by the FDA that specifically targets the jawline, an area Juvéderm’s parent company, Allergan Aesthetics, has found to be a key area concern for many consumers.

“This approval expands the Juvéderm collection of fillers and offers providers more options to address their patients’ lower face aesthetic concerns,” Carrie Strom, president at Global Allergan Aesthetics, tells Allure

This new filler won’t be available widely in the U.S. until early 2023, with product training amongst dermatologists, plastic surgeons, and other aesthetic treatment professionals to take place this fall. So in the meantime, we turned to the experts to ask what to expect when this new filler finally hits medical offices.

Meet the experts:

  • Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City.
  • Hadley King, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and clinical instructor of dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University.
  • Carrie Strom, president at Global Allergan Aesthetics.

What does Volux do?

Basically, Volux defines the jawline. It’s a dermal filler made of hyaluronic acid, similar to what you’d find in other Juvéderm fillers, such as Voluma XC. The main differences — besides where you’re injecting Volux — are that Volux has more structure and cohesivity and lift capacity, according to Hadley King, MD, a New York City-based board-certified dermatologist and clinical instructor of dermatology at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University. Strom adds that Volux is a lot firmer than Voluma XC, thus providing that chiseled jawline people are always seeking.

How does it work?

Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified cosmetic dermatologist at MDCS Dermatology in New York City says that hyaluronic acid filler is typically injected deep onto the bone along the jawline and chin to provide more definition. She explains that the filler provides structural support and contours the jaw so that it looks more lifted. While it will depend on your specific face shape and how much your provider suggests is to be injected, Dr. Garshick says you’ll notice a difference with even just one syringe.
