Recycling glass bottles into flower vases is a creative DIY project that adds a unique touch to your home décor. To cut a glass bottle, you should: remove labels, score the bottle, heat it in boiling water, cool it under cold water until it breaks, and sand the edges smooth for a safe and polished finish.
Materials:
- Bottle cutter or glass cutting bit
- Thick gloves
- Coarse and fine sandpaper
- Bowl with hot water
Step 1: Prepare the Bottle
Clean the bottle thoroughly by removing all labels and adhesive using warm water and dish soap. Dry it completely to ensure better adhesion when cutting.
Step 2: Choose the Size and Score the Bottle
Decide how tall you want your vase to be and adjust your glass cutter accordingly. Carefully score the bottle by rolling it against the cutter, ensuring a clean, even line around the entire surface.

Step 3: Heat the Bottle
Put on heavy gloves for protection. Submerge the scored bottle into boiling water, ensuring the scored line is fully submerged. Roll the bottle gently and let it sit for at least 30 seconds. Meanwhile, start a trickle of cool water in the sink for the next step.
Step 4: Alternate Hot and Cold Water
Remove the bottle from the boiling water and place it under the trickle of cold water, rotating it to evenly cool the scored area. The bottle should break along the score line. If it doesn’t, repeat Steps 3 and 4 until you achieve a clean break.
Step 5: Smooth the Edges

After the bottle breaks, use coarse sandpaper to even out the cut edge of the vase. Then, switch to fine-grit sandpaper to smooth the edges, ensuring a safe and polished finish.
