In 1949, the average home size was 909 square feet. By 1970, it had grown to 1,500 square feet, and in 2024, it had grown again, with average US sizes reaching around 2,100 square feet.

It’s no secret that as household consumption has increased, so has the house size required to hold the possessions. But not every state has kept up with the growing square footage trend. For example, Hawaiian homes average only 1,164 square feet, and New York Homes manage 1,490 square feet. Some other states, like Vermont, Florida, and Louisiana, fall in the middle, with homes around 2,000 square feet.
