Houseplants have been proven to increase air quality and boost moods. But aside from their physical and mental benefits, they’re also a design staple. If you’re looking for an easy-to-care-for that looks good, is easy to take care of, and can bring you prosperity, look no further than the Money Tree.

What is a Money Tree?

The Money Tree, technically known as the Pachira Aquatica, is native to South America and Mexico. It’s also a popular variety in Taiwan and Southeast Asia, thought to bring about luck and prosperity.

The Money Tree, with its braided trunk and waxy green foliage resembling palm leaves, is a unique addition to any space. While these trees can grow as tall as 60 feet in their natural habitat, they maintain a manageable size in indoor environments. Money Trees in large pots can reach 6-8 feet, but this plant will remain relatively small in a pot with less room for the roots to grow.

Money Tree Feng Shui Placement

Feng Shui practitioners believe the Money Tree brings luck, good fortune, and wealth, hence its name. Money Trees with five braided stems are said to represent the balance of the five elements of wood, water, fire, earth, and metal.

Where to place a Money Tree for wealth:

  • The best place in your home to put a Money Tree is the southeast corner. Alternatively, you can place this tree in your home office to promote luck, but try to get it in the room’s southeast corner.
  • If you own a retail business, consider placing one of these lucky plants at the entrance door or near the cash register.

Caring for a Money Tree

As someone who’s tried (and failed) to grow nearly a dozen different house plants, I can attest to this variety’s adaptability. The Money Tree is my longest-lasting houseplant, now in its fourth year.

These plants prefer bright but indirect sunlight. Consider placing them near a window that receives ample sunlight. In summer months, ensure that the sunlight isn’t overpowering, or it will scorch the tree leaves.

The Money Tree is a tropical plant that prefers warm temperatures and higher humidity. Your plant should thrive as long as your house is between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit.

To ensure the health of your tree, water it every couple of weeks or when the soil is about 75% dry. When watering, add water to the pot until you see it running from the drainage hole.
