DIY art ideas that look cute and aren’t that hard to make.
I’m always going to be an advocate for hanging art in your home – whether you’re buying or DIYing. Buying and collecting art can be really rewarding and fun, but it can also feel a bit intimidating. For plenty of reasons…not knowing where to look, or how to get started, not finding anything that you connect to personally, budgetary reasons, etc. So instead of leaving your walls empty, make your own art with this list of 17 DIY art ideas to try.
It’s easier than you may think and very affordable. You blank walls will thank you!
DIY Art Ideas
Art has the ability to instantly elevate a space – but I’m not just talking about fine art here. ALL art (even DIY wall art) can refresh and upgrade a room, when done right.
Here are nearly 20 ideas on how you can make your own art today…
1. Let’s start with an easy one….got a rug? Hang it on the wall. Now it’s wall art. It really is that simple and there are a ton of ways you can hang them. Even bulldog clips will work (like the ones above).
This rug, by Cold Picnic, is obviously a special one that already looks like a work of art. But this idea will work for nearly any rug.

2. This large scale collage, made with cuttings from my doodle paintings, is one that anyone can do! You can keep everything monochromatic to keep things easy or add a handful of colors for a bolder look.
And maybe make a little DIY paint palette while you’re at it.
3. If you’re a sewer, this patchwork wall art I made from a stack of thrift store denim would be a fun one to try. Budget-friendly!
4. Another simple sewing project to tackle…this diy for large wall art might be one of my faves. Using a unprimed raw canvas or cheap drop cloth, you can make a large scale piece of art that works in just about any room. The entire cost is less than $15!
5. Years ago, I bought a couple of linen throws from Kesslyr Dean and I loved one so much I stretched it onto stretcher bars (typically used for canvas), so I could hang it on the wall. The process is identical to my tutorial for stretching a canvas.
6. I love a good weaving hack. What about you? This (faux) woven wall hanging is a great beginner project, that produces unique textures that you’ll wanna reach out and touch.
7. Or start weaving for real with an item you already have at home: cardboard! You can create a cardboard loom in just a couple minutes and use it to create weavings of practically any size!
8. Cereal box art anyone? Grab those cereal and cracker boxes from the recycling bin and make some bold color blocked wall art with a supply you can find in your kiddo’s craft drawer.
9. My number one tip for creating statement wall art in under $30 minutes!
10. Like using wood in your DIY projects? Try some wood wall hangings for unique (reversible) wall art.
11. Have you ever used a potholder loom? It’s so much fun and really quick to get the hang off. Use the finished weavings as artwork, that you can frame up, hang straight on the wall, or in a more practical setting (like the kitchen). Here are the potholder loom instructions that I like to follow.
12. Mix it up with some mixed media artwork ideas for old paintings and prints.
13. An art hack that will take 5 minutes to complete? Why not?!
14. Get some budget prints made with these free textured paint downloads I made a while back.
15. Want more? I have six more simple DIY art ideas to check out. Including one (number 2 on the list) that is actually the inside of a book jacket (of a really great interiors book). You gotta check those out!
16. Wanna make art to give to friends or maybe even sell? Here’s how to make printables (of your own art with your phone). Or you can just download the freebies we made.
Framing Art
17. Once you have you new DIY art piece done, you may want to frame it! A great frame can elevate a piece of artwork instantly. And a bad one, can quickly have the opposite effect.
So, if you’re looking for the best place to buy picture frames, I can help – with a list of my fave pre-made frames to buy for artwork.
