Snake Coloring Pages

Snakes are some of the coolest creatures on the planet, and they make up the second-largest group of reptiles. Though I may not be able to talk you into loving snakes as much as I do, I can give you a few cool facts about them that might make you like them even more.

Did you know that snakes smell with their tongues and hear with their jaws? Snakes can sense chemicals in the air. Their tongue takes the scent back into the mouth where it is then interpreted as smell. They can hear with their jaws through environmental vibrations. Also, some species of snake have a difficult time seeing, so they view the world through heat vision—this is particularly useful for hunting prey.

Make a slithery new friend and exercise your creativity! Whether you’re looking for a scary snake coloring page or a cute one to color in, we have a variety. Not to mention, snake scales can be so fun to practice coloring different patterns.

Coloring Tips and Snake Facts!

In general, snakes are quite fast, which a lot of us know from personal experience. However, there are five species that can “fly”. Don’t worry, I don’t mean that they sprout wings! These select species actually glide through the air, contorting their bodies to essentially “fall with style”. Most of these snakes are in remote jungle areas, though.

If you’re worried about a snake being venomous, there are some indications that one may not be venomous at all. At a quick glance, most nonvenomous snakes have more of a spoon-shaped head and less of a deep, defined triangular head. If you’re close enough to see the snake’s eyes, a nonvenomous snake will have more rounded eyes, not cat-like slit eyes. As always, just be aware of your surroundings.

Now that we’ve gotten the general snake facts out of the way, let’s get to the good stuff! Not every species is the same, much like how every horse, dog, or cat isn’t the same. More specifically, not all snakes are colored the same either. Come along to learn some quirky fun facts about snakes and also how we should aim to honor their patterns.

King Cobra Coloring Pages

Native to Asia, king cobras are rather large snakes that come in a myriad of different colors: green, yellow, brown, or black. Typically, their bellies are barred or a plain yellow or white color. The defining characteristic of king cobras is their hood, the large, fanned protrusion around its head.

When coloring in a king cobra, we want to give special attention to its hood, which in many ways, is like its crown. The king cobra’s coloring can often help it blend into its surroundings, so we’ll want to use browns and variations of black to give the snake a more realistic feel.

Viper Coloring Pages

Unlike boa constrictors, all vipers are venomous. This family of snakes also includes rattlesnakes, copperheads, and cottonmouths. Where I live, copperheads are common. As kids, we were raised to always keep an eye out when playing outside.

The most important characteristic of vipers is how they camouflage. They have ridged scales, which helps them camouflage into their environment—along with their coloring. Because they are ambush predators, they like to blend into their surroundings. For example, the copperhead is a tan color with dark brown crossbands (like a saddle or hourglass shape), which really helps them blend into fallen, dried oak leaves during the autumn months.

When coloring these dangerously beautiful snakes, we can be a little rougher with our utensils to accentuate the ridges in their scales. Vipers come in a wide variety of colors, some are blue, teal, yellow, or dull browns and blacks.

Rattlesnake Coloring Pages

Rattlesnakes are a type of pit viper, but they are so popular that they deserve their own section! Remember, pit vipers have ridges in their scales, and these vipers definitely want to blend into their surroundings. Rattlesnakes are typically found in desert areas, where there is nothing but sand and heat. Their coloring is usually a speckled tan, yellow, white, and dark browns. However, their defining feature is their tail. As a warning, it might rattle its tail when you get too close!

Boa Constrictor Coloring Pages

Among some of the largest snake species in the world, boa constrictors are also one of the most common pet snakes. Their docile nature makes them the perfect companion—so long as you know what you’re getting yourself into!

With boa constrictors, you’ll want to use a softer coloring method. They have tinier scales that are smoother than other snakes, which make them oddly cuddlier. Try to use soft, small circles with your coloring utensil, instead of harsher, quick strokes.

Boas are typically a variation of dark browns and tans with hourglass saddles down their bodies. Even the lighter-colored boas will have these markings, and there will always be a faint hourglass saddle pattern. We discussed eye shape earlier, but while the boa constrictor has cat-like eyes, rest assured that it is nonvenomous.

Anaconda Coloring Pages

Did you know that the largest snake in the world is the Green Anaconda? These constrictors get to a whopping 20-30 feet long and can weigh upwards of 500 lbs.! Never fear, though; most of these gigantic creatures are found close to the equator in the South American swamps, marshes, and rivers.

For anacondas, we’ll want to use tans, blacks, or greens to fill in their colorings. However, their scales are very smooth, like that of a boa’s. The scales on a Green Anaconda are yellow and black. But all anacondas have a black stripe that angles from their eyes to their jaws.

Python Coloring Pages

This magnificent primitive snake is absolutely fascinating. Did you know that pythons have two functioning lungs, unlike other snakes that typically only have one? Also, pythons have vestigial lower limbs—which is super weird for snakes! Burmese pythons have been popular in the pet industry over the last few years due to their docile nature.

If you’re wondering whether your friend is holding their pet boa constrictor or pet python, here’s how you can tell the difference: pythons usually have black stripes running from their boxy nose through the eyes and down the back. Their scales are also quite smooth, but their head shapes are slightly different, as pythons have an extra bone in their skull. When we’re coloring pythons, we can use many of the same colors as boas, but some pythons are actually more of a green and yellow palette depending on where they live.

Don’t forget to get creative with these pages. It’s certainly important to color these adorable snakes in their natural habitat… but where would we be without creativity and a fantasy land with iridescent snakes?
