In an August 11th statement, long-time flooring store LL Flooring (formerly Lumber Liquidators) announced it’s filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy and closing 94 stores.
The company stated that it was in active negotiation with potential buyers and that after the first few weeks of bankruptcy proceedings, it hoped the court would grant approval for a sale.
Why Is LL Flooring Filing for Bankruptcy?
Lumber Liquidators was founded in 1994 by Thomas David Sullivan. The company originated in Massachusetts, where Sullivan resold wood from the back of a truck. The first storefront was opened in 1996, and the company found its niche in the flooring market. It has since become a nationally recognized name, opening more than three hundred stores nationwide. In April 2020, Lumber Liquidators rebranded to LL Flooring.
Like many home improvement companies, LL Flooring has experienced slower sales due to the current economic climate, slowing housing market, and rising interest rates.
“After comprehensive efforts to enhance our liquidity position in a challenging macro environment, a determination was made that initiating this Chapter 11 process is the best path forward for the Company,” said President and CEO of LL Flooring, Charles Tyson.
Which LL Flooring Stores Will Close?
LL Flooring has over 300 stores and an online store. According to their press release, 94 stores will have closeout sales but remain open, servicing customers until the final closing date, which will be no later than September 29th.
Starting September 4th, LL Flooring will stop accepting gift cards at all its locations, not just the ones closing.
