10 Fun Dolphin Facts for Kids

Want to learn more about these beautiful sea creatures? In Shark Bay, a remote coastal area in my home state of Western Australia, dolphins visit the Monkey Mia beach every day. They are so smart, they’ve been observed fitting marine sponges over their beaks to protect them from sharp rocks as they forage for fish in the coral reefs. Here’s some more fun dolphin facts:

  • There are 36 species of marine dolphins who live all around the world – in cold seas and warm oceans.
  • Dolphins don’t just live in saltwater. Four species of river dolphin live in the Amazon River and are not found anywhere else in the world.
  • Dolphins like to eat fish, squid, jellyfish, and crustaceans (like prawns), but they don’t chew their food.
  • Dolphins must surface the water to breathe air.
  • They use a hunting technique called ‘fish-whacking’! Dolphins use their tail to stun fish and make them easier to catch.
  • A dolphin pregnancy lasts between 9 and 16 months.
  • Dolphins have conical-shaped teeth. A dolphin can have between 14 and 240 teeth!
  • The most northerly pod of bottlenose dolphins live in Scotland.
  • Dolphins communicate to each other with clicks, groans, whistles, and squeals.
  • A dolphin can live between 20 years (smaller dolphin species) and 80 years (for larger dolphins).

What to Do With Your Free Dolphin Coloring Pages

You’ve colored these printable dolphin coloring sheets, now what? Get crafty, grab your amazing creations, and make something new. See our big ideas for what to do with your free dolphin coloring pages, once you’ve finished shading them in. These are fun rainy day activities for home or school.

Create Dolphin Wall Art

Make a whole gallery of dolphins! Do you have a dolphin design that you’re particularly proud of, or are you decorating a child’s bedroom? Buy a cheap frame and hang it on the wall for everyone to admire!

Create a Dolphin Collage

So, you’ve completed lots of our dolphin coloring pages?! Cut out all of the cute dolphin images and make a sea critter collage. You could even make a few creative additions like flowers, hearts, and glitter. Mix and match the images on a few of our printable dolphin coloring pages to create your own brand new image.

Use Them as Wrapping Paper

Like me, you may like to add a personal touch to gift-giving. Make a present extra special by using your dolphin coloring pages as wrapping paper. If you’re giving a BIG gift, you may need to print out the image at a larger size.

After your masterpiece is complete, fold around the gift, and tie off with string or fix the wrapping paper with tape. The custom paper will make the gift extra heartfelt and you’ll even save money!

Make Them Into Dolphin Bookmarks

In my opinion, as a bookworm, you can never have enough bookmarks. Make your own bookmark by simply folding or cutting your finished artworks into the size of a bookmark. If you want it to be strong, laminate it, or glue cardboard to the back, sealing it with Mod Podge.

You could even get a bit fancy, punch a hole in the top, and tie a tassel to your dolphin design. A personalized bookmark is also a cheap gift idea from kids to parents, teachers or grandparents. They’ll be tickled pink to receive a custom bookmark.

Use Them as Cards, Envelopes, or Journal Pages

Know a budding Marine Biologist? Make them a dolphin birthday card! We even have a dolphin coloring page with dolphins with a cake and party hats – perfect! You may need to plan ahead for this one. For example, if you want to make your dolphin coloring page into a dolphin card, make sure that the image takes up one quadrant of the sheet. That way, when you fold up your card, you can have your coloring page on the front. Your friend will love it!

A journal page doesn’t require this spacing consideration, as you can color your page and simply add it into your journal with glue or tape. You can even fold your dolphin coloring sheet into an envelope if you want to get creative.
