The Stanley Quencher debuted in 2016 but has become the “it” cup over the past two years. With double-wall vacuum insulation that keeps beverages cool for up to 9 hours, a convenient handle, and a myriad of colors, it’s easy to see how the Stanley Tumbler has earned a spot in the cabinets of millions.

But, as nice as these cups are, they aren’t immune to problems — like mold buildup. If you’ve had your cup for over a few weeks and haven’t washed it, there’s likely hidden mold in the lid.

Where to Check for Mold on Your Stanley Tumbler

When you screw off the lid of a Stanley, there is a rubber gasket under the rim. When moisture gets stuck under this gasket, mold will grow.

To check for mold or bacteria, remove your lid. If you see any black under the gasket, it’s past time to clean your cup. In most cases, getting rid of this mold is as easy as scrubbing with a dish scrubber or toothbrush and soap and water.

How to Clean a Stanley Cup

Prevent mold and bacteria buildup in your cup by washing it after each use. (If you’re only drinking water and want to avoid washing your cup every day, be sure to wash it at least twice per week.)

The best way to wash a Stanley Tumbler is by hand. Fill your sink with warm water and a little dish soap. Submerge your cup, lid, and straw, allowing them to soak for a few minutes. Wipe the cup and lid with a soft rag and use a straw cleaner to wash the inside of the straw. Rinse all pieces and place them on a towel to air dry.

It’s also safe to wash Stanley Quenchers in a dishwasher. However, doing so is harder on their paint job than hand washing. To clean your Stanley in the dishwasher, remove the cup’s lid and straw. Place the cup and lid on the top rack. (You may have to lay the cup on its side if it’s too large to fit.) Then, put the straw in the silverware tray. Run your dishwasher as usual.
