There was once an idea that as a woman got older, she should be resigned to the fact that her hairstyle should be short and unfussy. Luckily, those days are gone, and actors, from Andie MacDowell to Dame Helen Mirren, are advocates of switching up one’s gray and silver strands to glamorous effect.

A recent example of this was at Dolce & Gabbana’s Alta Moda show in Sicily. Dame Helen, 76, attended the haute couture celebration wearing a series of show-stopping dresses. The first, a billowing blue printed chiffon dress from the brand, and the second, a technicolor-striped gown, were complemented by a glossy yet simple hairstyle that highlighted her healthy, luminous skin.
With a middle-part and not a flyaway in sight, Mirren’s silver hair was pulled down into a low ponytail, secured at the nape of her neck. The hairstyle not only highlighted her beautiful skin and makeup (also notable was her terracotta lipstick), but it made her hair color glow, too.
