Google’s Pixel Tablet has definitely been a very long time coming. First teased in May 2022, it’s still not official, despite one being for sale on Facebook Marketplace back in December. Today a new rumor from a generally reliable source sheds some more light on the upcoming device.

Contrary to some previous mumblings, we are apparently only going to get one Pixel Tablet version – no ‘vanilla’ and ‘Pro’ separation here. Of the two possible iterations, the more high-end one stayed, and the lower-end model with the first-generation Tensor chipset apparently got canceled somewhere along the way.

The remaining Pixel Tablet will arrive with the Tensor G2 SoC that’s also featured in the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, a 2,560×1,600 resolution screen made by China Star Optoelectronics, and a Richtek RT4539 six-channel LED driver. This is used for LCD screens’ backlights, so don’t expect to see an AMOLED panel on Google’s upcoming tablet.

At least one version of the Pixel Tablet has 8GB of Samsung-made RAM and 256GB of UFS storage, as well as a side-mounted fingerprint reader (most likely embedded into the power button).

You can see some newly leaked images of the Pixel Tablet in the tweet embedded above. As previously revealed, it will have a dock for easy use as a smart display, though it’s unclear whether this will be included in the box or sold as an optional accessory. Hopefully the Pixel Tablet launches sooner, rather than later – it’s not often we’re at the eight month point since the maker first teased the device without it having gotten official in the meantime.
