When you visit a new city, using public transit is a convenient way to get around. But can your pet join you? Find out which cities in the U.S. and Canada offer pet friendly public transportation.

Woman and dog riding public transportation in a pet friendly city

Dealing with traffic while finding your way around a new city can be daunting. Jumping on the bus or train is much easier, but can your pet go, too? We’ve done the research, and are happy to bring you this guide to pet friendly public transportation across the US and Canada!

Before we dig in, please understand that this post includes only guidelines and policies for taking pets aboard public transit. Both the United States and Canada permit service animals to accompany disabled passengers on public transportation for no charge.

Most Public Transportation Allows Small Dogs Only

Most cities limit the use of their public transportation to small pets in carriers. For those of you with larger dogs, you’ll find that many ferries will accommodate your pet. Also, the water taxies in Annapolis, Maryland, Boston, Massachusetts, Charleston, South Carolina, Ottawa, Ontario, and Victoria, British Columbia welcome dogs on leash. Finally, the cities of Boston, Massachusetts, Everett, Washington, Seattle, Washington, Calgary, Alberta, Brampton, Ontario, Mississauga, Ontario, and Toronto, Ontario all have pet friendly public transportation policies that allow larger dogs to ride.

Check policies before you go. Most systems that allow large dogs require them to be muzzled.

San Francisco’s Muni system allows one pet per vehicle to ride during off-peak hours. Dogs must be leashed and muzzled and must ride on the rider’s lap or under their seat or be enclosed in a container. Muni charges a full-fee fare for pets.
